Provenance: German private collection.

A comparable portrait of a child with a dog, signed and dated 1661, can be found in the Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond/Virginia. The group of animals was possibly painted by Dirck Wijntracks, who was de Jongh's brother-in-law and always collaborated with him. On the genre, landscape and portrait painter, de Jongh, Walter Bernt writes, “The rare portraits are painted in the early style of B. van der Helst. Occasionally it is possible to prove the collaboration with his brother-in-law, the animal painter, D. Wyntrack or the landscape painter, J. van der Haagen...”.
